Katie is an exceptional kid, and gives 200% in everything she does. In order to fully understand what this young lady has achieved, you should know a little about her. Katie began playing sports at 5. She plays soccer, basketball, field hockey and softball. When she isn’t playing, she’s umpiring Little League, and helping out at her former grammar school. She’s involved in the community working at Food Share, making goody bags for a shelter for battered women and children, delivering food baskets to the needy, visiting nursing homes, and working at her church. She’s a graduate of the DARE program and the Citizens Police Academy. Currently, Kate is a Sophomore on the Varsity Field Hockey Team, a member of SADD, and the Superintendent’s Advisory Council. Whatever she does, she always gives her best, and her “do it right” attitude is known by all. This past December, while at basketball practice, she suffered an accident and was badly injured. Her knee was fractured in three places, the MCL and cartilage were torn, and her ACL ruptured. Sports as she knew it had come to a grinding halt. In February, a total knee reconstruction was necessary and Kate was told that she would be unable to resume any physical activities until the end of September. To her, that was simply unacceptable! She went to all of the teams basketball games and was the scorekeeper and unofficial cheerleader. Softball was next up, and once again, Kate refused to do nothing and feel sorry for herself. She attended her high school softball games, cheered and kept score. She did the same for her town and travel teams, all while on crutches and in a brace! She was also instrumental in a putting together a softball clinic for 127 inner city girls while collecting 142 new stuffed animals (admission "fee") for the Red Cross and the local children’s shelter. Because of her medical issues, she has had to work extremely hard. She may not dominate in any one sport or category, but she excels in them all. Her ambition is to give it all to help her team win. Even when playing through pain, she remains upbeat and smiling, and has a kind word or a helpful hint for others. Ask any of her coaches or teammates, and they will tell you that they have never met a girl who has such a positive attitude and is so committed to both her teams and the community. She is someone who exemplifies being a good sport, looks for opportunities to improve herself, and is compassionate in all aspects of life.
